Before you start playing guitar…
So you want to start learning the guitar – this is a very exciting time! In this brief article, I’ll be telling you some things to keep in mind before getting started and throughout your journey.
Why do you want to play the guitar?
It is an amazing instrument and if you ask a random person on the street if they wish they download the the ability to play the guitar from the matrix, I’d say 99% of people would say yes – If only it were that easy!
Playing the guitar is a long road – it can provide you with a lifetime of fun and fulfilment, but it isn’t for the faint hearted. Your fingers will hurt, and you might get bored with it from time-to-time when starting out, but if you push through you will see the progress that you desire taking form.
Understanding WHY you want to play the guitar will help you through the lows. Maybe it’s because you saw someone play and it blew your mind, and now you want to play like that. Whatever your ‘why’ is, keep it in the forefront of your mind so that you can envision yourself accomplishing that goal. I’ve taught pupils of all ages and the ones who do well are those who have the right attitude from day one. The ones who give up are those whose hearts had never really been in it.
Why should you learn guitar?
Besides being a whole lot of fun, Playing guitar can be an excellent outlet for stress relief. It requires focus, which can help take your mind off of whatever is causing you stress. Playing guitar can also improve your motor skills and coordination. The more you play, the better you’ll become at it. In turn, this can boost your brainpower, memory, cognitive skills and confidence. Playing guitar can also be a great way to socialize. You can meet other musicians, start a band, or even join a guitar club. Finally, playing guitar can provide you with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. I know that for myself, guitar as helped me improve my confidence, self-discipline, concentration, social life, creativity, self-esteem, and aural skills. It’s a great hobby that you can enjoy for years to come, and even turn it into a profession if you pursue it whole-heartedly.

The right attitude:
– I want to challenge myself and become a good guitarist.
– Music theory is my friend.
– I just love everything to do with guitar and music.
– I’m happy to work hard to become better.
– I have a place where I can focus on practise without being distracted.
– I understand that everyone has a musical voice that deserves to be heard.
The wrong attitude:
– I want to play guitar to impress people.
– I just want to play as fast as possible.
– “Who is your favorite guitarist?” I dont really listen to guitar music.
– I don’t care about music theory, it’s boring.
Guitar is fun!
Nothing truer has ever been said. If you’re not having fun when you play guitar, do something else – life is too short!
